There are currently two former Pistons who are head coaches in the NBA. Darvin Ham is one of them, and Mr. Big Shot Chauncey Billups is the other.
Another relatively unknown player is Ham, an energetic forward who made a little impression on the 2004 championship squad before deciding to focus his energies on coaching. For now, Ham’s first NBA position is head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Apart from serving as an assistant in several leagues, Ham also held the position of head coach while he was with the NBA’s development squad, the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.
During his playing career, Rasheed Wallace was frequently praised for having a high basketball IQ, but his attitude on the court could not have been seen favorably on a coaching CV. Still, the hiring of him as an assistant by the Pistons in 2013 opened the door to the coaching world. Before being replaced at the start of the unfortunate Stan Van Gundy period, he held the position for two years.
2019 saw Wallace return to teaching after a hiatus when he accepted the head coaching position at Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina, which is close to the school where he played collegiate hoops. ‘Sheed left for Memphis in 2021 to work with Penny Hardaway, where he spent a season as a Tigers assistant.
