Darius Lassiter Will Not Return to BYU Football for 2025 Season

Darius Lassiter, a standout wide receiver for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars, will not be returning for the 2025 football season. This development follows an appeal process seeking an additional year of eligibility, which ultimately did not succeed.Lassiter’s Impact at BYU Lassiter transferred to BYU from Eastern Michigan in 2023 and quickly became an integral part of the Cougars’ offense. In his debut season, he recorded 29 receptions for 365 yards and four touchdowns over 10 games, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors. His performance peaked in the 2024 season, where he served as a co-captain and received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention from the College Football Network. A highlight of his career was a career-high 129 receiving yards and a game-winning touchdown reception in a 38-35 victory over Oklahoma State, earning him a spot on the Pro Football Focus National Team of the Week. Eligibility Appeal Process Following the 2024 season, Lassiter sought an additional year of eligibility based on a recent NCAA ruling that granted extra eligibility to players who had competed at non-NCAA institutions, such as junior colleges. This ruling had previously allowed Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia an extra year due to his junior college experience. Lassiter, having attended Butler Community College in Kansas, applied for a similar waiver. In January 2025, reports emerged suggesting that Lassiter was considering a return to BYU, contingent upon the approval of his eligibility waiver. His return was anticipated to bolster an already strong receiving corps, especially with fellow receiver Chase Roberts also returning. Outcome of the Appeal Despite the optimism, the appeal process did not yield the desired outcome. On March 14, 2025, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake addressed the media, stating that it was “highly unlikely” Lassiter would qualify to return for the 2025 season. He emphasized that while efforts were made in line with NCAA rules, the final decision rested with the NCAA, and the prospects were not favorable. Impact on BYU’s 2025 Season Lassiter’s absence will be felt in the Cougars’ offense. His experience, leadership, and playmaking abilities contributed significantly to BYU’s aerial attack. However, the team retains a strong receiving unit, with Chase Roberts leading the group. Roberts, who briefly considered entering the NFL Draft, announced his return for the 2025 season, providing stability and experience. Additionally, emerging talents like Cody Hagen and Tei Nacua are expected to step up and fill the void left by Lassiter. The coaching staff remains optimistic about the depth and potential of the receiving corps, aiming to build on the successes of the previous season.Lassiter’s Legacy and Future Prospects While his time at BYU has concluded, Lassiter’s contributions have left a lasting impact on the program. His performances showcased his talent and resilience, qualities that will serve him well as he transitions to professional aspirations. Lassiter is expected to prepare for opportunities in the NFL, where his collegiate achievements have positioned him as a promising prospect. In conclusion, Darius Lassiter’s departure marks the end of a notable chapter in BYU football. His efforts on and off the field have been commendable, and while the team will miss his presence, they are equipped to adapt and continue their pursuit of excellenc
