Dallas Cowboys Near Decision on Unexpected Head Coaching Hire: Report
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly on the verge of naming Brian Schottenheimer, their current offensive coordinator, as the team’s next head coach. This development was revealed by Clarence Hill Jr. of AllDLLS.com, who shared updates on his social media account.
“Expect the Cowboys to finalize the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer by Friday, if not sooner,” Hill posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Brian Schottenheimer, 41, is the son of the late Marty Schottenheimer, a respected and long-serving NFL head coach. Brian joined the Cowboys organization in 2022 as a coaching analyst and was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2023. A Denver native, Schottenheimer brings extensive coaching experience to the table, having served as an offensive coordinator for multiple NFL teams, including the New York Jets (2006-2011), the then-St. Louis Rams (2012-2014), and the Seattle Seahawks (2018-2020). Additionally, he worked as a quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders (2001), the then-San Diego Chargers (2002-2005), and the Indianapolis Colts (2016-2017). Schottenheimer also held the role of passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 and took on responsibilities as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Georgia in 2015.
The potential hiring of Schottenheimer aligns with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ history of appointing head coaches with prior ties to the organization. This approach was evident in Jones’ decisions to promote Dave Campo and Jason Garrett from their roles as defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. Notably, Garrett became the Cowboys’ head coach in 2011 after serving as the interim head coach, despite lacking full-time head coaching experience at the time.
Schottenheimer’s promotion to offensive coordinator followed Kellen Moore’s departure to accept the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles. Interestingly, Moore was interviewed virtually by the Cowboys for the head coaching position but remains ineligible for hiring until the Eagles’ season concludes.
The Cowboys are reported to have considered other candidates for the position, including Leslie Frazier, a former NFL head coach who currently serves as the Seattle Seahawks’ assistant head coach, and Robert Saleh, the former head coach of the New York Jets. However, Schottenheimer now appears to be the frontrunner to take the reins in Dallas.
With Schottenheimer’s diverse coaching background and deep familiarity with the Cowboys’ system, the team may be betting on his leadership to usher in a new era
of success.
