Alabama basketball player Houston Mallette might pursue a medical redshirt after this season due to persistent knee issues, as stated by head coach Nate Oats on Friday. Initially, Mallette was expected to redshirt, but he returned to play in six games following Latrell Wrightsell Jr.’s injury. However, his knees remain problematic, making him unfit for Alabama’s upcoming game against LSU.
Coach Oats mentioned that allowing Mallette to participate in only half of the conference games may not be fair to the player. The plan is to assess his knee condition midway through the season to decide if he can fully contribute to the remaining games. Mallette, who transferred from Pepperdine, missed the summer training due to his knee issues.
Furthermore, Alabama might also miss forward Derrion Reid for their next game, as he is currently dealing with a lower-body injury and has been sidelined for the past three games.
