NBA fans won’t have to wait too long to see Cooper Flagg make his Summer League debut.
The Dallas Mavericks sprinted to the podium on Wednesday night to select Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. They won the draft lottery despite having only 1.8% odds to win it. It wasn’t a surprise that Dallas chose the Duke phenom. He proved he’s a true difference-maker this past season, averaging 19.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison highlighted Flagg’s motor when asked about his latest draft pick.
“When you watch him play, he plays hard. … When you have a player that’s that good and people talk about the intangibles – they don’t talk about basketball – then that’s a guy who’s going to add to your culture
Flagg’s motor will be on full display July 10 when he makes his Summer League debut. That being said, fans aren’t thrilled about his first NBA matchup
The NBA confirmed that Flagg will take on Bronny James and the Los Angeles Lakers during his first Summer League game.
Some fans believe Flagg’s first game should’ve came against another rookie, not a second-round pick from the 2024 NBA Draft. Others, however, understand Bronny will help generate ratings
Don’t they usually do the #1 vs #2 pick as the first summer league game wtf is this,” one fan asked.
“Everything is about advertising & marketing dollars, the league as a product is dying and we are all witnesses,” a second fan wrote.
“Most people don’t know who the second pick is and last draft no one knew any rookie but Bronny James,” another fan argued. “Take the biggest name from last draft and put him against the biggest name from this draft. It makes sense.”
“The league isn’t dumb. They know what names sell. This is just like the NFL using Shedeur Sanders to get views,” a fourth person commented.
