In a significant development for Nebraska football, Turner Gill, a celebrated figure in the program’s history, has been appointed as an assistant coach for the Cornhuskers. Gill’s return brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted connection to the university, both as a former standout quarterback and a seasoned coach.
During his collegiate playing career from 1981 to 1983, Gill led Nebraska to a remarkable 28–2 record, securing three consecutive Big Eight championships. His leadership and performance on the field earned him a fourth-place finish in the 1983 Heisman Trophy voting. Following his playing days, Gill transitioned into coaching, serving as Nebraska’s quarterbacks coach from 1992 to 2002. In this role, he was instrumental in developing talents like Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch, contributing to the team’s national championships in 1994, 1995, and 1997.
Gill’s coaching journey extended beyond Nebraska, including head coaching positions at the University at Buffalo, where he led the Bulls to their first Mid-American Conference Championship, and at Liberty University, guiding the Flames through their transition to NCAA FBS football. His tenure at Liberty was marked by four conference championships and the program’s first-ever FCS playoff victory.
In his new role with the Cornhuskers, Gill is expected to focus on player development and mentoring, leveraging his extensive experience to foster growth both on and off the field. His return is anticipated to invigorate the program, drawing on his legacy and commitment to excellence.
As Nebraska looks to build upon its storied football tradition, Gill’s appointment underscores a dedication to leadership grounded in experience and a profound understanding of the program’s culture and aspirations
