The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is proud to announce the return of a familiar face and revered figure to its football program. Former American professional football legend Turner Gill has been officially appointed as the new Assistant Coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. This marks a celebrated homecoming for one of the most influential names in the university’s athletic history.
A standout quarterback for Nebraska in the early 1980s under legendary coach Tom Osborne, Gill etched his name into Cornhuskers lore with his leadership, talent, and undeniable competitive spirit. He led the Huskers to three consecutive Big Eight championships from 1981 to 1983 and came within a whisker of winning a national championship. His on-field intelligence and unshakable poise earned him All-Big Eight honors and placed him among the elite in college football during his playing days.
After a brief stint in professional football, Gill transitioned into coaching, where he has built a respected career over several decades. He previously served as head coach at Buffalo, Kansas, and Liberty University, where he led the Liberty Flames to their first-ever bowl appearance and victory. Known for his emphasis on character, integrity, and player development, Gill’s coaching philosophy is as impactful off the field as it is on it.
Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts expressed enthusiasm about the appointment:
> “Turner Gill is more than a coach — he’s a mentor, a leader, and a true Cornhusker. His return is not only a homecoming, but a monumental step forward for our program’s future.”
Gill’s new role as assistant coach will involve mentoring quarterbacks, contributing to offensive strategy, and playing a key role in recruiting efforts. His deep understanding of Nebraska’s football heritage and his commitment to developing student-athletes holistically makes him a perfect fit for the evolving culture under current head coach Matt Rhule.
Turner Gill shared his excitement:
> “This university has always held a special place in my heart. It’s an honor to return and help shape the next generation of Huskers. I believe in this program, its values, and its vision.”
Fans, alumni, and players alike are celebrating the appointment, recognizing it as a blend of tradition, excellence, and renewed ambition. As the Cornhuskers look to rise once again to national prominence, the addition of Turner Gill to the coaching staff brings both a symbolic and strategic boost to the program’s resurgence.
Welcome home, Coach Gill. Go Big Red!
