COMMITTED: Hawthorne Chooses Kentucky over Duke, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh

In a highly anticipated decision that captivated the college basketball recruiting world, four-star small forward Braydon Hawthorne officially announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky. His choice concludes a competitive recruitment that saw him weigh offers from prominent programs including Duke, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh.

Hawthorne, a 6-foot-8 wing from Huntington, West Virginia, had been a highly sought-after prospect known for his versatility, scoring ability at all three levels, and a remarkable 7-foot-3 wingspan. His stock soared during his senior season at Huntington Prep, where he showcased significant development in his perimeter game and defensive capabilities.

The recruitment journey for Hawthorne was notable, particularly his prior commitment to West Virginia under former coach Darian DeVries. However, following DeVries’ departure to Indiana, Hawthorne reopened his recruitment, drawing renewed interest from a host of top-tier programs. He took official visits to each of his final contenders, including Duke, Kentucky, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, before making his final choice.

Ultimately, it was Kentucky and head coach Mark Pope who secured Hawthorne’s pledge. Reports indicate that the consistent communication and strong relationship built with Pope and his staff played a significant role in his decision. Hawthorne expressed a belief that Kentucky offered the ideal environment for his continued development. “Coach Pope and his staff called me every single day,” Hawthorne stated. “I had the strongest relationship with coach Pope and his staff. I talked to them probably just as much as I talked to my family before announcing. So that meant a lot to me.”

For Kentucky, Hawthorne’s commitment is a significant boost to their 2025 recruiting class, adding a high-upside prospect to a group that already includes four-star guard Jasper Johnson and four-star center Malachi Moreno. His addition strengthens the Wildcats’ future outlook and demonstrates Coach Pope’s ability to attract top talent.

For the other programs, missing out on Hawthorne is a setback, but each will undoubtedly continue to pursue other targets to bolster their rosters. Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh had all made strong cases, with West Virginia having the hometown advantage and an initial commitment. However, Kentucky’s consistent pursuit and the vision presented by Coach Pope ultimately swayed the talented forward. Braydon Hawthorne’s commitment sets the stage for an exciting collegiate career, with Big Blue Nation eager to see his impact on the court.
