Coach O’Connell Provides Injury Update on New Guard Will Fries
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an important update this week on offensive guard Will Fries, who joined the team this offseason. Fries, acquired to bolster the offensive line, is recovering from a fractured tibia suffered during offseason workouts and has yet to take the field with the team.
In his media availability, O’Connell emphasized that while Fries is still not participating in drills, his rehab is on track. “Will is progressing well,” said O’Connell. “Our medical staff is pleased with how he’s responding, and we expect him to be involved in training camp as we ramp things up.”
The Vikings signed Fries with the expectation that he would compete for a starting spot on the interior offensive line. Known for his strength and toughness during his time with the Indianapolis Colts, Fries was expected to add depth and stability to a unit that has seen frequent changes over the past two seasons.
His injury has forced the Vikings to rely more heavily on younger linemen during OTAs, giving prospects like Ed Ingram and Blake Brandel more reps at guard. While the coaching staff is encouraged by the competition, they’ve made it clear that Fries is still very much in their long-term plans.
O’Connell expressed optimism that Fries will be available for joint practices and the preseason. “He’s attacking rehab like a pro,” O’Connell added. “We’re not rushing anything, but we’re confident we’ll have him when it matters most.”
The update offers reassurance for fans concerned about offensive line depth. As the Vikings aim to protect their young quarterbacks and build a balanced offense, the eventual return of Fries could prove to be a valuable asset in both run blocking and pass protection.
