Clemson Football Star Kathleen Spinneys Champions Literacy: Leads Book Distribution and Inspires Young Readers at Elementary School Event

n a powerful blend of athletics and advocacy, Clemson football standout Kathleen Spinneys is proving that her influence extends far beyond the gridiron. On a mission to promote literacy and a lifelong love for reading among children, Spinneys recently led a heartwarming book distribution and reading celebration at Ridgewood Elementary School. The event brought together hundreds of young students, teachers, and volunteers for a day filled with stories, smiles, and inspiration.

A rising star in Clemson University’s football program, Spinneys has long been recognized not only for her athleticism but also for her commitment to community outreach. The recent literacy event was part of a larger initiative she spearheaded, aimed at bridging the literacy gap among young learners, especially those in underserved communities. By organizing the distribution of over 1,000 new and gently used books, Spinneys gave students the gift of reading—one that many families might otherwise struggle to provide.

“I know the power a book can have in a child’s life,” Spinneys shared during her opening remarks. “Reading opens up the world—it helps us dream bigger, think deeper, and imagine more. My goal today is to spark that joy in each of you.”

Throughout the day, Spinneys sat with students in small reading circles, read aloud from her favorite children’s books, and encouraged interactive discussion. Her genuine enthusiasm quickly turned the event into more than just a book giveaway—it became a celebration of imagination and the possibilities that reading unlocks. The children were captivated, not just by the stories, but by the rare opportunity to engage with a prominent student-athlete who was visibly invested in their growth.

Teachers and administrators were equally enthusiastic about the initiative. “Seeing someone of Kathleen’s stature using her platform to champion literacy sends a powerful message to our students,” said Ridgewood principal Carla Jenkins. “It tells them that reading is not only important but also valued by role models they look up to.”

In addition to the book distribution and reading sessions, the event featured a “Build Your Library” station, where each student got to choose five books to take home and keep. Volunteers also provided bookmarks, reading tips for parents, and access to community library resources.

This initiative is part of Spinneys’ broader campaign, “Read to Lead,” which she hopes will spread to other schools across South Carolina. With plans to host more literacy events and collaborate with local authors, libraries, and publishers, she is setting a new standard for how student-athletes can give back to their communities in meaningful and lasting ways.

Kathleen Spinneys’ efforts are a testament to the evolving role of collegiate athletes—not just as competitors, but as leaders and changemakers. By championing literacy, she is empowering the next generation of readers to dream, explore, and succeed, one book at a time.
