Class of 2025 guard Darius Adams decommits from UConn men’s basketball

UConn’s incoming 2025 recruiting class took a blow Saturday as five-star 2025 guard Darius Adams requested his release from the program. Adams, who committed to UConn in September and signed his national letter of intent in November, initially chose the Huskies over Michigan State and Tennessee.

Adams is a consensus top-25 player in the 2025 recruiting and is well regarded as a scorer. At 6-foot-4, he fit Dan Hurley’s mold of taller, offensively-minded guards. He joined incoming UConn freshman Braylon Mullins and Eric Reibe as McDonald’s All-Americans this season.

“Great basketball family, the type of skill and size at the guard spot that has gotten us where we are,” Hurley said on signing day. “Excellent offensive player who can score at all three levels, a big-time shooter.”

Given UConn’s recent success in the transfer portal, Adams release is unexpected but logical. With the recent commitments of transfers Silas Demary Jr. and Malachi Smith — both guards with multiple years of eligibly — and the lofty expectations around incoming Mullins, Adams was likely already on the outside looking in for playing time through no fault of his own. With this decommitment, Adams now has a better chance of landing in a spot where he can play significant minutes right away. Aside from MSU and Tennessee, NC State and Alabama also heavily recruited Adams.

Adams’ departure from the program will likely drop the Huskies from the No. 2 overall incoming class ranking (transfers and recruits) on 247Sports, but UConn still will have one of the best incoming groups of players in the nation. The Huskies now have at least five open scholarships for next season and potentially six depending on Alex Karaban’s decision, meaning UConn may not be done in the portal.
