CBB Blue Devils HC Jon Scheyer reveals important injury update on Cooper Flagg ahead of March Madness

Duke University’s men’s basketball team, the Blue Devils, have been navigating a season filled with both triumphs and challenges. A pivotal moment came during the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament, where star freshman Cooper Flagg sustained an ankle injury that cast uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The Injury Incident

In the ACC Tournament quarterfinals against Georgia Tech, Flagg, widely regarded as a top prospect for the 2025 NBA Draft, suffered a sprained right ankle. The injury occurred in the first half when Flagg landed awkwardly after securing a rebound. He was initially seen in a wheelchair but later returned to the bench, supporting his teammates despite being sidelined for the remainder of the game.

Coach Jon Scheyer’s Assessment

Following the game, Coach Jon Scheyer provided an update, stating that Flagg’s X-rays were negative, indicating no fractures, but confirmed a sprain. Scheyer noted that it was unlikely Flagg would participate further in the ACC Tournament. He emphasized the importance of monitoring the swelling and ensuring Flagg’s readiness for the NCAA Tournament.

Duke’s ACC Tournament Triumph

Despite Flagg’s absence, Duke showcased resilience, clinching the ACC Tournament title with a 73-62 victory over Louisville. Tyrese Proctor led the team with 19 points, while Kon Knueppel, named tournament MVP, added 18 points. Sion James contributed 15 points, and Khaman Maluach secured 8 points along with 10 rebounds. The team’s strong second-half performance, including a decisive 12-0 run, was instrumental in their triumph.

Outlook for the NCAA Tournament

As the NCAA Tournament approaches, Coach Scheyer remains optimistic about Flagg’s recovery. He expressed confidence that Flagg will be ready for the tournament opener, stating, “I think it’s trending in a great way where Cooper will be ready to go right away in the NCAA Tournament.”

Anticipation and Expectations

Flagg’s potential return is a significant boost for Duke, especially considering his impact throughout the season. He leads the team in all five major statistical categories and is a strong contender for national player of the year honors. His presence is crucial as the Blue Devils aim to make a deep run in March Madness.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Cooper Flagg’s performance and its impact on Duke’s pursuit of another national championship.
