BYU Softball Misses NCAA Tournament for Fourth Consecutive Year
The BYU Cougars softball team faced disappointment once again, narrowly missing the 2025 NCAA Tournament and being listed among the “First Four Out” for the second consecutive year. Despite a commendable 32–17 overall record and a 13–11 finish in Big 12 play, the Cougars were not selected for the 64-team field announced on Selection Sunday.
Head Coach Gordon Eakin expressed the team’s frustration, stating, “The emotions of missing the postseason by being the first team out for a second straight year are tough to explain. The team works so hard and to come up just short is tough.”
Several factors contributed to BYU’s exclusion. A mid-season loss to Utah Valley on April 1 significantly impacted their Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), dropping it to 47—a figure typically insufficient for at-large selection. Additionally, a 6–2 loss to Cal State Northridge in February further weakened their postseason resume.
In the Big 12 Tournament, the Cougars secured a 4–0 victory over Houston but were subsequently eliminated after a 4–2 loss to Iowa State.
This marks the fourth straight season BYU has missed the NCAA Tournament, a stark contrast to their previous 16-year streak of consecutive appearances.
Looking ahead, the Cougars aim to break this cycle and return to postseason play in 2026. With a strong core returning and lessons learned from close calls, BYU remains determined to reestablish its presence in the national softball landscape.
