BYU Linebacker Ben Bywater Fully Healthy and Ready to Lead Defense in 2025
After missing most of the 2024 season due to a shoulder injury, BYU linebacker Ben Bywater is back at full strength—and he’s making it clear he’s ready to lead the Cougars’ defense in 2025. The senior linebacker, who has long been one of BYU’s most productive and vocal defenders, is returning with renewed focus and energy as the team prepares for another season in the rugged Big 12 Conference.
Bywater, who led the team in tackles in both 2021 and 2022, spent the offseason rehabbing and getting back into top physical shape. Coaches and teammates have noted his explosiveness and range in spring practices, a promising sign that he’s fully recovered.
“Ben looks as sharp as ever,” said head coach Kalani Sitake. “He’s flying around the field and bringing that leadership we’ve missed. He’s the heart of our defense.”
Known for his high football IQ and relentless motor, Bywater also brings critical experience to a BYU defense that struggled with consistency last year. His return adds stability to a linebacker unit filled with young talent, and he’s already mentoring underclassmen like Siale Esera and Ace Kaufusi, helping to build cohesion.
Defensive coordinator Jay Hill praised Bywater’s return: “He brings a level of confidence and communication that elevates everyone around him. He’s the guy who gets us lined up right—and he makes plays.”
With Bywater anchoring the defense and setting the tone, BYU fans can expect a more aggressive and disciplined unit in 2025. If he remains healthy, the senior linebacker not only has the potential to earn All-Big 12 honors, but also to solidify his position as one of the top defensive leaders in recent BYU history.
