BYU Football Lands Michigan State DL Transfer Jalen Smith to Bolster Front Line
BYU Football has scored a major defensive upgrade with the addition of former Michigan State defensive lineman Jalen Smith via the transfer portal. Smith, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound redshirt junior, brings Big Ten experience and a high motor to a BYU front that is aiming for more disruption and physicality in the trenches heading into the 2025 season.
During his time at Michigan State, Smith appeared in 22 games across three seasons, tallying 38 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. Known for his blend of size, quickness, and relentless energy, he will provide much-needed depth and competition to BYUโs defensive line rotation, which struggled at times last season against Big 12 opponents.
BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill emphasized the importance of building the defense โfrom the inside out,โ and Smithโs commitment aligns perfectly with that vision. Whether lining up at defensive end or tackle, Smith gives the Cougars a versatile lineman capable of playing multiple positions depending on the scheme and opponent.
โProvo felt like the right place for me to grow as both a player and a person,โ Smith said during his commitment announcement. โIโm ready to bring Big Ten toughness to the Big 12 and help BYU dominate up front.โ
Smithโs decision to join BYU comes after weighing interest from Arizona, Virginia Tech, and Colorado State. His move to the Cougars is part of a strategic portal push that has seen BYU prioritize experience and athleticism on both sides of the ball.
With spring practices in the rearview and fall camp approaching, Smith is already on campus and participating in team workouts. He is expected to make an immediate impact and could emerge as a leader on a defensive line that is determined to elevate its play in 2025.
