BYU Defensive Line Anchored by Veteran Tyler Batty’s Leadership and Grit
As BYU gears up for the 2025 season, veteran defensive end Tyler Batty is once again proving to be the heart and soul of the Cougar defense. Entering his final season with the team, Batty brings not only talent and experience, but also leadership that is shaping a young and hungry defensive unit.
Batty, who led the team in sacks and tackles for loss in 2024, has embraced his role as a mentor to BYU’s younger defensive linemen. He’s been vocal during spring practices, guiding players through drills, sharing insights during film sessions, and holding teammates accountable during conditioning.
“I’ve been here a while now, and I take pride in being a leader,” Batty said. “This is my last run, and I want to leave everything on the field—for my team and for BYU.”
Defensive coordinator Jay Hill praised Batty’s impact both on and off the field, calling him a “pillar” of the defense. “Tyler sets the standard,” Hill said. “His motor never stops. He’s physical, smart, and he demands the same intensity from everyone around him.”
Batty’s presence is especially important as BYU transitions to a more aggressive defensive scheme in the Big 12. He’s expected to be a key pass rusher and edge-setter, capable of pressuring quarterbacks while anchoring against the run.
With several underclassmen rotating in on the line, Batty’s mentorship is vital. Freshmen like Isaiah Moa and Logan Fano have already noted the influence he’s had on their development.
As the Cougars prepare for a tough schedule ahead, Batty’s experience and leadership could be the glue that holds the defense together. Fans can expect him to leave it all on the field this season, aiming to end his BYU career with impact and pride.
