BYU Cheerleaders Dazzle El Paso Crowd During Tour Stop
EL PASO, Texas — The BYU Cougarettes and cheerleading squad brought high energy, dazzling routines, and Cougar pride to El Paso over the weekend as part of their annual summer tour, wowing a packed crowd at the Sun City Sports Complex.
As part of Brigham Young University’s nationwide outreach tour to connect with fans and showcase school spirit, the BYU spirit teams made a stop in El Paso to perform for local youth groups, alumni, and community members. The performance, which included intricate stunts, synchronized dance routines, and crowd-engaging cheers, was met with enthusiastic applause and standing ovations from hundreds in attendance.
“These young women and men are incredible ambassadors for our university,” said BYU Spirit Director Jodi Maxfield. “They represent not just athletic excellence, but also dedication, discipline, and heart. We’re thrilled to bring a bit of Provo to El Paso.”
The cheerleaders performed a series of routines featuring their signature high-flying pyramids and sharp, precise choreography, set to upbeat music that had the crowd clapping along. The Cougarettes, BYU’s elite dance team known for their national titles and competitive success, delivered a captivating halftime-style performance, showcasing a blend of jazz, hip-hop, and lyrical dance styles.
Many in the audience were local fans who had never seen the team perform live. For them, the event was both entertaining and inspiring.
“My daughter’s on a dance team, and seeing the Cougarettes perform gave her so much motivation,” said El Paso resident Maria Gonzales. “It was powerful, elegant, and fun all at once.”
In addition to their performance, the BYU spirit teams held a youth clinic earlier in the day, offering local cheerleaders and dancers a chance to learn from some of the best in the country. Participants left with BYU gear, new skills, and big smiles.
The El Paso tour stop is part of a broader effort by BYU to engage with communities beyond Utah and spread the values and culture of the university. Events like this one not only entertain, but also encourage youth to pursue higher education, athletics, and community involvement.
As the BYU cheerleaders continue their tour across the Southwest, one thing is clear: their talent and enthusiasm leave a lasting impression wherever they go.
