Brigham Young University has officially appointed Brian Santiago as its new Director of Athletics, succeeding Tom Holmoe, who announced his retirement earlier this year after two decades of service. The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, with a formal introduction at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
Santiago, a longtime member of the BYU athletics department, began his career at the university in 1997 as part of the men’s basketball coaching staff. He transitioned into athletic administration in 2001 and has since held various leadership roles, including senior associate athletic director and deputy athletic director. His extensive experience and deep understanding of BYU’s athletic programs made him a standout candidate during the national search that considered over 50 individuals.
In his remarks, Santiago expressed his commitment to excellence and the university’s mission, stating, “We’re going to be passionate about excellence … and we’re going to walk the path together.” He also emphasized the importance of relevance in collegiate athletics, noting, “If we’re not relevant, nobody cares who we are.”
Santiago’s appointment marks a new chapter for BYU athletics as the university continues to navigate the evolving landscape of collegiate sports. His leadership is expected to build upon the foundation laid by Holmoe, focusing on the success of student-athletes both on and off the field.
