Patriots and Chiefs Discussed a Trade for Joe Thuney, But Couldn’t Agree on Price

In the world of the NFL, trade discussions are often as common as draft picks and player signings, and the New England Patriots are no strangers to the trade market. Recently, reports surfaced that the Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs engaged in trade talks surrounding one of New England’s top offensive linemen, Joe Thuney. However, the two teams reportedly couldn’t come to an agreement on a deal due to differing views on Thuney’s value.

Thuney, a former third-round pick of the Patriots in 2016, has been one of the most reliable and consistent players on the New England offensive line. A two-time Super Bowl champion and a versatile player who can anchor multiple positions along the line, Thuney’s ability to protect quarterbacks and open lanes for running backs has made him a key figure in the Patriots’ offense. This consistency has earned him widespread recognition, and many teams across the league have viewed him as a player who could significantly improve their own line.

The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off their Super Bowl victory in 2020, have consistently looked for ways to fortify their offensive line to protect franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is known for his ability to extend plays and make incredible throws, but the Chiefs’ offensive line has been a recurring concern in recent seasons. Following a rough showing in Super Bowl LV, where Mahomes was pressured relentlessly by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense, Kansas City made it a priority to revamp their offensive front. They signed multiple new players, including Joe Thuney, during the 2021 offseason, highlighting their commitment to providing better protection for Mahomes.

Although Thuney was traded from the Patriots to the Chiefs before the 2021 season, it appears that New England was not yet ready to part ways with him. Sources suggest that the two teams discussed the possibility of a trade involving Thuney, but the Patriots were unwilling to meet the Chiefs’ price. Given the quality of play Thuney has consistently exhibited, New England was reportedly asking for a substantial return, which Kansas City deemed to be too high for the veteran guard.

While specific details of the trade discussions have not been confirmed, it is clear that both teams recognized the value of a player like Thuney. However, the Patriots’ asking price was reportedly too steep for the Chiefs, and ultimately, no deal came to fruition. It’s worth noting that Thuney’s market value has only continued to rise due to his impressive track record and versatility, which has made him an even more sought-after asset.

For the Patriots, keeping Thuney was likely a strategic decision. The offensive line is one of the most important elements of any successful team, and the Patriots have relied on their strong offensive front for years to keep quarterbacks upright and ensure a balanced offense. While the Chiefs’ interest in Thuney was likely a sign of his continued value across the league, New England’s decision to hold onto him reflects their belief in his importance to their roster moving forward.

Ultimately, while trade discussions did take place, both teams will likely turn their focus elsewhere. The Chiefs have already bolstered their line with other key players, and the Patriots remain confident in the ability of their offensive line, including Thuney, to continue performing at a high level. For now, Joe Thuney remains a key fixture for the New England Patriots as they look ahead to future seasons.
