Trace McSorley Returns to Penn State as Assistant Quarterbacks Coach
In a move that has energized the Penn State community, former Nittany Lions quarterback Trace McSorley has joined the university’s football coaching staff as the assistant quarterbacks coach. This appointment reunites McSorley with head coach James Franklin, under whom he led Penn State to significant successes during his collegiate career.
McSorley, who played for Penn State from 2016 to 2018, holds several school records, including most wins by a starting quarterback (31) and total offense (11,275 yards). His leadership was instrumental in Penn State’s 2016 Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl appearance.
After being selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, McSorley spent time with multiple NFL teams, including the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. His transition into coaching marks a new chapter in his football journey.
Working alongside quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien, McSorley is expected to mentor current quarterbacks, including starter Drew Allar. His firsthand experience as a Penn State quarterback provides valuable insights for developing players. Coach Franklin emphasized McSorley’s deep connection to the program, stating, “Trace is a special guy to me. He’s a special guy to Penn State, our history and our tradition.”
McSorley’s return is part of a broader trend of former Penn State players joining the coaching staff, bringing a wealth of experience and continuity to the program. His presence is anticipated to have a positive impact on the team’s performance and culture in the upcoming seasons
