Nebraska wrestler dismissed from team after arrest in Lincoln.
A Nebraska wrestler was dismissed from the team after his arrest in Lincoln on Sunday.
A probable cause affidavit shows that officers with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department were called to Smith Hall, a UNL residence hall, at 11:55 p.m. on Saturday.
A female victim told police that someone tried to light her door on fire just 15 to 25 minutes before they arrived. The victim said she heard a flickering lighter and smelled smoke coming from outside her room, which prompted her to open the door and chase after the male suspect.
During the investigation, officers discovered a burn mark on the victim’s dorm room door.
UNLPD reviewed security video and identified the suspect as 18-year-old Colin McAlister. He was arrested and lodged in the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of first-degree arson.
Court documents show he pleaded not guilty to one count of criminal mischief up to $500, a misdemeanor, on Monday.
A Nebraska Athletics spokesperson said they are aware of the incident and confirmed that McAlister is no longer on the wrestling team. His name has also been removed from the Nebraska roster.
“The Nebraska Athletic Department is aware of the incident and charges and can confirm that Colin McAlister has been dismissed from the wrestling program. We have no additional comment on this matter.”
