BREAKING: BYU legend Steve Young returns to LaVell Edwards Stadium as Senior Coach, bringing excitement and legacy back to Cougar football.

Steve Young Returns to BYU as Senior Coach, Igniting Cougar Nation

In a stunning and exhilarating announcement, BYU has welcomed home one of its most iconic figures: Steve Young. The NFL Hall of Famer and former BYU Cougars quarterback has returned to Provo to join the football program as a Senior Coach, sending shockwaves of excitement throughout Cougar Nation and the college football world at large.

Young’s return to LaVell Edwards Stadium is far more than symbolic. As a player, he left an indelible mark on the program, leading BYU to national prominence in the early 1980s. His legendary 1983 season—where he passed for over 3,900 yards and earned consensus All-American honors—remains one of the greatest in school history. Decades later, his name still echoes in BYU lore as one of the most dynamic and intelligent quarterbacks to ever wear the Cougar uniform.

Now, as a Senior Coach, Steve Young brings with him a wealth of experience, leadership, and an unmatched football IQ. After a decorated 15-season career in the NFL, including a Super Bowl MVP and two league MVP awards with the San Francisco 49ers, Young transitioned into broadcasting and business, all while remaining a vocal supporter of BYU athletics. His football mind, combined with his deep understanding of the university’s culture and mission, makes him a perfect fit for this new role.

Athletic Director Tom Holmoe, himself a former teammate of Young’s with the 49ers, called the hiring “a monumental moment for BYU football.” He added, “Steve Young is a symbol of excellence, both on and off the field. His return to the program is a full-circle moment that brings immense value to our student-athletes and coaching staff.”

Head Coach Kalani Sitake also expressed his excitement. “To have someone like Steve Young involved in the development of our players is a dream come true. His presence alone elevates the program, and his insights into leadership, preparation, and high-level quarterback play will be invaluable.”

Young’s role as Senior Coach is expected to be a hybrid position, focusing on mentorship, leadership development, and quarterback training. He will also contribute to game-planning and recruiting efforts, particularly by leveraging his national reputation and ties within the professional football community.

For Cougar fans, this move is deeply personal. Young represents an era of glory and innovation under the late LaVell Edwards. His return not only connects the program’s proud past with its present but also signals a bold vision for the future as BYU continues to establish itself in the Big 12 Conference.

Steve Young, ever humble, remarked during the press conference, “BYU shaped me in ways I’ll never forget. This is home, and I’m honored to be part of building the next chapter in Cougar football.”

As BYU prepares for the upcoming season, the return of its prodigal son injects a powerful new energy into the program. With Steve Young back in Cougar blue, the possibilities are as limitless as his legendary left arm once was.
