In one of the most unexpected and controversial moves in franchise history, the Florida Panthers have announced plans to erect a full-size bronze statue of Brad Marchand outside Amerant Arena, celebrating what team officials are calling his “unmatched contribution to Panthers greatness.”
Yes, you read that right. Brad Marchand, the longtime Boston Bruins agitator and often polarizing NHL figure, is being honored—not in Boston, but in South Florida.
Why Marchand?
Panthers executives say the decision comes not from Marchand’s on-ice stats with the Panthers (of which there are none), but rather his indirect legacy and legendary battles that helped shape the Panthers’ identity and toughness over the years.
> “Brad Marchand brought out the best in our team, sharpened our edge, and fueled a rivalry that elevated the Panthers to championship caliber,” said Panthers President Matt Caldwell. “This statue honors that fire.”
The statue will feature Marchand mid-stride, jawing at an opponent, in classic form—symbolizing not just a player, but an era of fire and fearlessness.
Fans React
The decision has sparked a massive reaction online. While some fans call it a “tongue-in-cheek masterpiece,” others are labeling it “an embarrassment” and a “troll job taken too far.”
Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk even chimed in on Instagram:
“Respect to the rat. Every hero needs a villain.”
Unveiling Soon
The statue is set to be unveiled during the Panthers’ season opener later this year, with Marchand himself reportedly invited to attend. No word yet if he’ll show—but if he does, expect fireworks.
