Big 12 Breakthrough? Three Conference Contenders Among Top Candidates for First-Ever College Football Playoff Berth in 2025

The 2025 college football season is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing in recent history, and the Big 12 is right in the middle of the conversation. With the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP) format debuting, the conference has a golden opportunity to reassert itself on the national stage. For years, the league has struggled to consistently place teams in the four-team playoff, but with a wider field and increased representation, 2025 could finally mark a breakthrough.

While the departure of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC dealt a blow to the conference’s national prestige, the Big 12 has reloaded with talented programs and remains a deep and competitive league. Among the contenders, three teams stand out as legitimate threats to earn a spot in the inaugural 12-team playoff: Kansas State, Utah, and Oklahoma State.

Kansas State: A Dark Horse No More

Kansas State has quietly built one of the most consistent programs in the Big 12 under head coach Chris Klieman. The Wildcats won the conference championship in 2022 and have remained a tough out for every opponent since. With a physical style of play, a strong defense, and an improving offense, they have the foundation to make a serious CFP push.

The 2025 season could be their best chance yet. Quarterback Avery Johnson, an electrifying dual-threat talent, gives them a dynamic playmaker at the most important position. If the offensive line holds up and the defense continues to play at a high level, Kansas State could run through the Big 12 and earn its first-ever CFP berth. The Wildcats’ ability to win in the trenches and control the clock makes them a tough matchup for anyone.

Utah: Ready to Dominate the Big 12

Utah enters its first season as a Big 12 member in 2024, and by 2025, the Utes could very well be the new powerhouse of the conference. Kyle Whittingham’s program has been built on physicality, defense, and strong quarterback play—qualities that have made Utah a consistent winner in the Pac-12. With their transition to the Big 12, they bring a battle-tested roster and a winning mentality.

If Utah can establish itself as the dominant force in the Big 12, a CFP berth is highly likely. The Utes have consistently competed for conference titles in the past, and with the Big 12 lacking a clear dominant team, they could take control quickly. Their track record of success in big games and their ability to develop NFL talent make them one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

Oklahoma State: Always a Contender

Mike Gundy’s Cowboys have been on the verge of a CFP appearance multiple times but have fallen just short. With the expanded playoff format, 2025 might finally be their year. Oklahoma State is known for its explosive offenses and ability to develop playmakers at quarterback and wide receiver.

The Cowboys’ path to the playoff will depend on whether they can maintain defensive stability while continuing to score at a high level. If Gundy can find the right quarterback and the defense steps up, Oklahoma State could be a serious contender for one of the 12 coveted CFP spots.

Final Thoughts

With a more accessible playoff format and a deep, competitive field, the Big 12 has a real shot at sending multiple teams to the postseason in 2025. Kansas State, Utah, and Oklahoma State all have the talent, coaching, and schedules to make a run. If one or more of these teams can emerge as a dominant force, the Big 12 might finally secure a long-awaited breakthrough in the College Football Playoff.
