Bears Sign Deal With Former 49ers Veteran CB Ahead of NFL Draft

In a strategic move ahead of the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears have bolstered their secondary by signing veteran cornerback Nick McCloud to a one-year contract.

McCloud’s NFL Journey

Nick McCloud embarked on his professional career as an undrafted free agent, initially joining the Buffalo Bills in May 2021. Over the past four seasons, he has demonstrated versatility and resilience, playing for teams including the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers. Throughout his career, McCloud has participated in 40 games, starting 16, and has accumulated 96 tackles, three for loss, an interception, 1.5 sacks, 10 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

2024 Season Highlights

In the 2024 season, McCloud split his time between the Giants and the 49ers. With the Giants, he played in seven games, starting five, and recorded 13 tackles, one pass defensed, and a special teams tackle. He then joined the 49ers’ practice squad in November 2024, was promoted to the active roster later that month, and contributed primarily on special teams, appearing in eight games and registering 11 tackles.

Bears’ Defensive Strategy

The Bears’ decision to sign McCloud aligns with their strategic focus on enhancing special teams and adding depth to their defensive backfield. At 26, McCloud brings a blend of experience and athleticism, having demonstrated proficiency in both defensive and special teams roles across multiple teams.

Looking Ahead

As the Bears approach the NFL Draft, McCloud’s addition provides valuable experience and flexibility to their secondary. His proven track record in special teams and defense positions him to make an immediate impact, contributing to the team’s aspirations for the upcoming season.
