BASKETBALL3 thoughts on painful Nebraska basketball loss to Ohio State

In a pulsating double-overtime matchup on March 4, 2025, the Nebraska Cornhuskers fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 116-114, in Columbus, Ohio. The game, marked by relentless scoring and dramatic swings, has left Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament aspirations hanging by a thread.

Senior guard Brice Williams delivered an unforgettable performance for Nebraska, setting a new school record with 43 points, including 31 after halftime. His 16 field goals tied a Nebraska record, and his five 3-pointers were a personal best. Williams’ efforts were complemented by Juwan Gary’s 24 points and contributions from Connor Essegian (16 points) and Andrew Morgan (14 points).

Ohio State’s offense was equally formidable, with Bruce Thornton leading all scorers with 29 points. Micah Parrish added 22 points, including a crucial 3-pointer in the second overtime, while Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. each chipped in 22 and 20 points, respectively.

The game was a rollercoaster from the outset. Nebraska overcame an early 19-8 deficit to lead 45-39 at halftime. Ohio State surged in the second half, building an 11-point lead, but Nebraska responded, with Williams hitting a free throw to force overtime. In the first overtime, Williams scored the first five points, but Ohio State rallied, setting the stage for a tense second overtime. Parrish’s 3-pointer and clutch free throws from Mobley Jr. in the final seconds sealed the victory for the Buckeyes.

This defeat marks Nebraska’s fourth consecutive loss, bringing their record to 17-13 overall and 7-12 in the Big Ten. With their NCAA Tournament hopes now uncertain, the Cornhuskers will host Iowa on March 9, aiming to secure a much-needed win to bolster their postseason chances.
