Mark Pope began his basketball career as a solid if unspectacular presence on the court. A 6’10” forward, he played college basketball for the University of Washington before transferring to Kentucky, where he became part of the Wildcats’ 1996 NCAA championship team. He wasn’t a…

I have worked with UK Kentucky Men’s Basketball players for over 17 years. They are 18 -22 year old kids that have worked hard to get to Division 1 basketball. They fight over what kind of candy they want in my candy bowl, they come to class after getting home at 4 am after a big loss with their hoodies over their heads because they are so disappointed. They try hard, are in fish bowl but much bigger than they could have ever imagined. Sure ,many make millions but at this stage they are kids trying their hardest to be successful and as Oscar says so well… they are not “machines”. #perspective
For over 17 years, you’ve had a front-row seat to one of the most misunderstood truths in college athletics: behind the bright lights, roaring crowds, and million-dollar projections, these young men are still just kids—18 to 22 years old—navigating the pressures of adulthood under a microscope. Your words paint a vivid, heartfelt portrait of what it really means to be a Kentucky Wildcat, and they echo something Oscar Tshiebwe once said with powerful simplicity: “I’m not a machine. I’m Oscar.” That sentiment resonates deeply because it strips away the myth of invincibility that often surrounds elite athletes. These players may…
