Auburn Ends Tennessee’s Final Four Dream with Dominant Midwest Regional Win
The Tennessee Volunteers’ dreams of reaching the Final Four were crushed in heartbreaking fashion as the Auburn Tigers dismantled them 69–50 in the Midwest Regional Final. In a clash of SEC giants with national implications, Auburn’s defense proved suffocating, holding Tennessee to just 15 points in the first half—their lowest halftime total all season.
Despite entering the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed and riding high on momentum, Tennessee’s offense stalled early and never recovered. Guard play that had been consistent throughout March Madness suddenly faltered, and top scorer Dalton Knecht was limited by Auburn’s relentless perimeter pressure.
The Tigers capitalized on turnovers and transition opportunities, pulling away in the second half behind the sharpshooting of star forward Johni Broome, who finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Tennessee struggled to match Auburn’s tempo and physicality, going cold from beyond the arc and getting out-rebounded on both ends.
Vols head coach Rick Barnes acknowledged the disappointment but praised his team’s journey. “This one hurts,” he said. “But I’m proud of these young men and what they’ve done for Tennessee basketball this year. We didn’t play our best tonight, but they’ve set a standard.”
This loss marks another Elite Eight exit for the Volunteers, a program still searching for its first Final Four appearance in school history. While the season featured memorable wins and standout performances, it ends with the bitter taste of missed opportunity.
Still, with a solid recruiting class incoming and key players potentially returning, Tennessee fans can remain hopeful. But for now, Auburn will dance on to the Final Four, and the Vols will head home wondering what might have been.
