Amid Transfer Talks — Assessing the Cougars’ Chances at a Reunion

Tanner Toolson, a familiar name to Cougar fans, is back in Provo—but this time, the circumstances are different. After spending the 2023–24 season with Utah Valley University (UVU), the former BYU guard is exploring a potential return to the place where his collegiate career began. His recent visit to BYU has stirred buzz among fans and insiders alike, raising the question: how realistic is a reunion between Toolson and the Cougars?

Toolson originally signed with BYU in 2020 after an impressive high school career at Union High in Washington, where he earned the title of Washington’s Mr. Basketball. Known for his athleticism, high motor, and defensive prowess, Toolson brought strong potential to BYU. However, after redshirting his freshman year and seeing limited action, he transferred to UVU seeking more consistent playing time and a larger role.

At UVU, Toolson found his stride. He played a key role in the Wolverines’ backcourt, averaging 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in the 2023–24 season. His development as a more complete scorer and on-ball defender caught the attention of several programs, including his former team.

BYU’s interest comes at a pivotal moment. With the departure of several guards and the need for experienced, versatile backcourt players as the Cougars continue their transition into the Big 12, Toolson offers an intriguing blend of familiarity, maturity, and upside. His ability to defend multiple positions, push the pace, and knock down perimeter shots aligns well with Mark Pope’s system.

From Toolson’s perspective, a return to BYU could make sense on multiple fronts. Beyond the opportunity to play at a Power Five level, there’s a comfort and familiarity with the coaching staff and program culture. His time away has allowed him to grow as a player—both physically and mentally—and he may now be in a position to contribute meaningfully where he once watched from the sidelines.

That said, BYU will likely face competition for Toolson’s commitment. Other Division I programs are expected to pursue him aggressively, especially those looking for an experienced guard with proven production and untapped potential. His decision could come down to role clarity and fit, both on and off the court.

So what are BYU’s chances? The visit is a strong indicator of mutual interest. The program’s current roster situation, combined with Toolson’s ties to Provo and the familiarity with Coach Pope, gives BYU a solid shot. However, landing him will likely require assurances of a significant role and a clear development plan moving forward.
