AJ Ferrari Opens Up About Heated Rivalry with Carter Starocci: “He Said Some Crazy Stuff”
In a candid interview, AJ Ferrari, former Oklahoma State national champion and current Cal State Bakersfield wrestler, addressed his highly publicized feud with Penn State’s Carter Starocci, a five-time NCAA champion. The rivalry, which ignited on social media, saw both athletes exchanging bold challenges and personal jabs, captivating the wrestling community.
Ferrari initiated the tension by cautioning Starocci against moving up to the 197-pound weight class, suggesting it would be unwise. Starocci responded provocatively, proposing a high-stakes match with terms that included a $300,000 wager and a requirement for the loser to get a tattoo reading “Starocci is my NATTY DADDY” .
Reflecting on the exchange, Ferrari remarked, “He said some crazy stuff on that social media post. He took it personal. I’m trying to promote wrestling.” He emphasized his intent to elevate the sport’s profile, stating, “I’m being myself, and I’m trying to grow our sport… You can’t do that if you don’t embrace people’s personalities and a couple little controversies.”
Despite the animosity, Ferrari acknowledged Starocci’s prowess, predicting his victory in the NCAA finals against Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen. Starocci fulfilled that prediction, securing a historic fifth NCAA title .
While the much-anticipated match between Ferrari and Starocci never materialized due to weight class differences, their rivalry underscores the passion and intensity inherent in collegiate wrestling.
