After a Rapid Start, Hodge Settles into Role at West Virginia
When DerMarr Hodge arrived at West Virginia, expectations were high and the pace was even higher. Transferring in from Missouri, Hodge entered the Mountaineers’ program amid coaching transitions and roster changes, immediately thrown into the thick of Big 12 competition. The early weeks were a whirlwind — adjusting to a new system, building chemistry with new teammates, and finding his place both on and off the court.
Despite the chaos, Hodge made an immediate impact. Known for his defensive tenacity and outside shooting, he quickly proved why he was a sought-after addition. Still, the initial pressure and fast pace of the transition came with growing pains. “It was a lot at once,” Hodge admitted in a recent interview. “New environment, new expectations, and I had to learn fast. But that’s part of the game.”
Now, midway through the season, Hodge is settling in — and it’s showing. His decision-making has sharpened, his defensive reads are more instinctive, and his role within the team is clearer. Coaches have praised his adaptability, noting his improved communication on the court and leadership off it.
Hodge credits the coaching staff and his teammates for helping him find his rhythm. “They’ve been great about supporting me and pushing me,” he said. “Now it feels like home.”
As the Mountaineers continue to push through a competitive schedule, Hodge’s development will be key. His ability to knock down big shots and guard multiple positions makes him an asset on both ends. More importantly, his comfort within the program is translating into confident, consistent play — something West Virginia will lean on as the season heats up.
