Kentucky football’s Kroger Field set for $7 million renovation to ribbon video boards and lighting
The ribbon boards, which surround the stadium’s interior seating bowl, were installed in 2011, but “have exceeded their useful life” and “are challenging to repair,” according to an agenda item from the board’s athletics committee
A busy offseason for the Kentucky football program hasn’t just been limited to changes happening on the Kroger Field gridiron. It now includes some changes to the stadium itself.
During its meeting later this week, the university’s board of trustees is set to approve a $7 million renovation to ribbon video boards and lighting at the Wildcats’ longtime home football stadium. The item added that the stadium’s lighting systems “require upgrades to better align with the amenities experienced in modern football stadiums.” Together, the committee noted, the impending changes will “improve the experience for student-athletes and the loyal fans who attend their games.”The project will be privately financed. It was first approved by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2022
The 51-year-old venue known for much of its existence as Commonwealth Stadium has undergone several cosmetic and structural enhancements in recent years. The stadium’s end zone video boards were replaced prior to the start of the 2022 season and before the ensuing 2023 season, the turf field was replaced
