On Thursday, May 30, legendary WVU quarterback Pat White will be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame.
White grew up in Daphne, Alabama and spent four years under center for the Mountaineers from 2005-2008, choosing football over baseball after being drafted in the fourth round of the MLB Draft in 2004. In White’s four years in Morgantown, he helped revolutionize the game as a true dual-threat quarterback, who once held the record for rushing yards in a career by a quarterback in college football history with 4,480.
In four seasons, White threw for over 6,000 yards and had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 56-23, while adding another 47 touchdowns on the ground. He helped West Virginia to four-straight bowl wins and was a crucial piece of the highest AP poll-ranked Mountaineer team in program history.
After being named Big East Offensive Player of the Year twice and Senior Bowl MVP, White was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He also spent time with the then-Washington Redskins as a training camp member, the UFL’s Virginia Destroyers and the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos.
White also ultimately pursued a baseball career, being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 and the New York Yankees in 2009, playing with the Kansas City Royals in the 2010 Fall Instructional League. Since, White has been coaching, having spent the last three seasons as the Los Angeles Chargers quarterbacks coach, having also been an assistant at Alabama State Alcorn State and South Florida.
Other inductees this year for the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame is former 10-year NFL veteran Captain Munnerlyn, the late Carvell Rowell, who spent six years in the MLB, South Alabama Athletic Director Joe Gottfried and volleyball player/coach Kelli
