Eighteen students from West Virginia University (WVU) have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a significant recognition that will help fund their upcoming study abroad experiences. This accomplishment marks a growing trend among WVU students seeking global education opportunities while representing their state and university on the international stage.
The Gilman Scholarship, administered by the U.S. Department of State, is awarded to undergraduate students receiving Pell Grants who plan to participate in study or internship programs abroad. It is designed to support students who might otherwise not have the financial means to pursue international learning. The goal is to increase diversity in study abroad programs and to prepare students for careers in an increasingly globalized world.
This year’s group of WVU recipients reflects a diverse range of academic disciplines and destinations. From Europe to Asia and Latin America, students will be engaging in programs that enhance their educational experience, broaden cultural perspectives, and build valuable skills. Many will study languages, participate in service-learning opportunities, or pursue fieldwork aligned with their academic majors and career goals.
WVU has seen a rise in Gilman recipients in recent years, thanks in part to robust support from the Office of Global Affairs and the ASPIRE Office, which assist students in identifying opportunities and preparing competitive applications.
For these 18 students, the Gilman Scholarship represents more than financial aid—it is a gateway to transformative experiences that will shape their academic paths and professional futures. As they prepare to travel across the globe, they also carry the Mountaineer spirit with them, serving as cultural ambassadors and contributing to international understanding.
This achievement underscores WVU’s commitment to global engagement and the value of expanding access to international education for students from all bac
kgrounds.
