In a stunning turn of events on the college baseball recruiting trail, West Virginia University has secured one of its biggest commitments in recent memory. Colton Sims, widely regarded as Kansas’ top third baseman and a projected top-10 round MLB Draft prospect according to Perfect Game, has flipped his commitment from perennial powerhouse Vanderbilt to the Mountaineers.
Sims, a 6’3″ right-handed slugger known for his smooth glove work and explosive bat speed, made his decision public this afternoon. The switch is a huge win for WVU head coach Randy Mazey’s program, which continues to build national momentum after back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
In an exclusive chat, Sims opened up about what drove the surprising decision:
“It really came down to where I felt I could grow the most as a player and as a person,” Sims shared. “Vanderbilt is obviously an elite program, but when I visited Morgantown and connected with the coaching staff and players, it just felt like home. I want to help WVU make a run at Omaha and leave my mark on the program.”
Sims also highlighted WVU’s player development track record and the opportunity for early playing time at third base as key factors.
The Mountaineers have been steadily climbing the college baseball ranks, and this commitment further proves they’re ready to compete with the big boys in the recruiting world.
