The Boston Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds 13-6 on Monday in the latest sign that the team’s offense is finally starting to wake up after trading Rafael Devers on June 15.
While Wilyer Abreu’s historic night at the plate, Garrett Crochet’s nine-strikeout performance, and Jordan Hicks’ Red Sox debut have rightfully dominated the headlines, a more heartwarming moment took place during the game when NESN’s play-by-play analyst Dave O’Brien took a minute to share heartwarming news about the son of a beloved Red Sox legend and former NESN analyst.
Before the game, Catherine Varitek, the wife of former Red Sox captain and current game-planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek, shared a social media post congratulating the 21-year-old son of Tim Wakefield on his first day working for the Red Sox.
“Huge shout out to Trevor Wakefield working his first night at Fenway selling 50/50 raffle tickets for the Red Sox Fund. High fives if you see him,” wrote Varitek.
Wakefield, who pitched 17 seasons with the Red Sox and won two World Series titles with the team, died of brain cancer on October 1, 2023. His wife Stacy died of pancreatic cancer on February 28, 2024. Since their tragic passings, Wakefield’s former teammates have played an active role in supporting the couple’s two children.
- The Red Sox organization paid tribute to the Wakefields during the team’s 2024 home opener when members of the 2004 World Series championship team marked the 20th anniversary of the iconic series. Wakefield’s children, Trevor and Brianna, threw out the first pitch during the on-field celebration.
