BYU Officially Becomes Full Revenue-Sharing Member of the Big 12
Brigham Young University (BYU) has officially reached a major milestone in its transition to Power Five football: it is now a full revenue-sharing member of the Big 12 Conference. This development marks a significant financial and competitive boost for the Cougars as they continue to establish themselves in one of college sports’ most prominent conferences.
BYU joined the Big 12 in 2023 as part of the conference’s expansion, which also included Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston. However, like most new additions to major conferences, BYU initially received a partial revenue share while it acclimated to the new landscape. Now, entering the 2025 fiscal year, the university will receive a full share of Big 12 revenue distribution—estimated to be worth tens of millions annually from media rights, sponsorships, and other revenue streams.
The full share status not only enhances BYU’s financial footing but also provides increased stability and resources for its athletic programs. This includes better funding for facilities, recruiting, staffing, and player development—critical components for competing at a high level in football, basketball, and other sports.
For BYU fans, this milestone represents a validation of the school’s long-standing commitment to athletic excellence and independence. After years as a football independent, BYU now benefits from the security and prestige of being part of a Power Five league with equal financial standing.
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has emphasized the importance of unity and competitiveness within the conference. With BYU now fully integrated, the Cougars are poised to be an even more impactful member of the Big 12 as the league evolves following the departures of Texas and Oklahoma.
Overall, full revenue-sharing membership signals a new era for BYU Athletics—one of opportunity, growth, and elevated ex
pectations.
