Jaden Akins Pledges $2 Million for Homeless Youth Housing Facility — A Slam Dunk of Compassion Beyond the Court
East Lansing, MI — June 26, 2025
In a move that redefines what it means to be a student-athlete and a role model, Michigan State basketball standout Jaden Akins has pledged $2 million toward the creation of a cutting-edge housing facility for homeless youth in Michigan. The bold and compassionate gift marks one of the most significant philanthropic contributions ever made by an active college athlete.
At a press conference held at the Breslin Center, Akins stood humbly behind the podium, flanked by coaches, teammates, and representatives from local nonprofit organizations. What followed wasn’t just an announcement—it was a deeply personal mission delivered with conviction.
“This isn’t about headlines. It’s about hope,” said Akins. “There were times in my life when stability felt uncertain, and I know how much a safe space can change someone’s path. I want to be that change for someone else.”
The facility—tentatively named “The Lift Center”—will be located in downtown Lansing, just 15 minutes from Michigan State’s campus. Designed in partnership with the Michigan Youth Housing Initiative, the center will feature emergency shelter beds, transitional housing units, counseling offices, academic tutoring spaces, and a recreational gym—reflecting Akins’ belief in both emotional wellness and physical activity as key components of healing and growth.
The $2 million donation will serve as the foundational funding for the project, with construction set to begin in early 2026. Additional fundraising efforts are already underway, with several Michigan-based companies and Spartan alumni pledging matching contributions.
MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo was visibly moved as he spoke about his player’s decision.
“We talk about legacy all the time—how you’ll be remembered. Jaden just showed us that legacy is built off the court as much as on it,” Izzo said. “This is what it means to lead. He’s the kind of person every coach hopes to mentor.”
Akins, a rising senior and projected NBA Draft pick, has made headlines over the past two seasons with his explosive athleticism and tenacious defense. But off the court, his work in the community has steadily grown. From hosting youth clinics to mentoring underserved teens, this donation is the culmination of a personal promise he made to use his platform to give back.
Local youth advocate Danielle Rios, who helped draft the plans for The Lift Center, said the gift could change the trajectory for hundreds of young people.
“Young people need more than shelter—they need hope, consistency, and someone who believes in their future. Jaden Akins just became that someone,” Rios said.
For Akins, the pledge isn’t a goodbye gift before the pros—it’s the beginning of something bigger.
“Basketball gave me opportunity,” Akins said. “Now it’s my turn to create opportunity for others. If even one life is changed, it’s worth every penny.”
