Mountain State Gets Island Heat: West Virginia Adds Talented LHP from Hawaii via Transfer Portal
The West Virginia Mountaineers baseball program continues to make waves in the offseason, landing a key addition from the transfer portal with the acquisition of a talented left-handed pitcher from Hawaii. In a move that bolsters the Mountaineers’ bullpen and signals their aggressive approach to roster building under head coach Randy Mazey, the addition brings both depth and versatility to the pitching staff heading into the upcoming season.
The transfer, whose identity will soon be formally announced by the program, comes from the University of Hawaii, where he stood out as a reliable arm during the 2024 campaign. Known for his deceptive delivery, sharp breaking ball, and ability to command the zone, the southpaw finished last season with an ERA under 3.50, striking out more than a batter per inning in conference play. He made both starting and relief appearances, showcasing a flexibility that will be a huge asset in the Big 12.
For West Virginia, this pickup is about more than just numbers. It’s about addressing needs and adding experience. With several pitchers graduating or moving on to professional opportunities, the Mountaineers had holes to fill. This new addition offers not only a high-ceiling lefty but also someone who’s already battle-tested at the Division I level.
“Adding a guy like this from Hawaii shows the kind of reach we’re building as a program,” said a member of the WVU coaching staff, speaking anonymously due to ongoing compliance reviews. “He’s a competitor. He’s got poise, command, and he fits the mold of the type of player we want representing this university—tough, team-first, and fearless.”
The move also continues a trend of West Virginia succeeding in the transfer portal. In recent years, the program has supplemented its strong recruiting classes with key veteran additions who bring immediate impact. Last year’s portal class helped fuel the Mountaineers to one of their best seasons in recent memory, including a regional appearance and several series wins in conference play.
This latest acquisition adds a unique flavor to the clubhouse as well. Coming from Hawaii, the pitcher brings a different background and playing experience, adding to the team’s growing geographic diversity. Teammates and coaches are already excited about the cultural and competitive energy he’s expected to bring to Morgantown.
From the Hawaiian Islands to the hills of West Virginia, the transition will be significant. But the coaching staff believes the pitcher’s adaptability and maturity will make for a smooth adjustment.
“This is a kid who’s not afraid of a challenge,” said the staffer. “Coming from Hawaii to Morgantown isn’t easy, but he’s hungry. He wants to win. And that’s what we’re building here.”
With fall practice just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long to get their first look at the newest Mountaineer. And if his track record is any indication, this LHP could play a major role in helping West Virginia climb even higher in the college baseball ranks next season.
