Salt Lake City, UT — The Utah Warriors and the greater rugby world bid farewell to one of the sport’s most respected and resilient players, as Paul Lasike, former BYU All-American and international rugby star, officially announced his retirement from professional rugby. Known for his unmatched power, humility, and leadership, Lasike departs the game not just as a champion on the pitch — but as a true warrior in life.
Lasike, 34, made the announcement Tuesday morning alongside team executives and family at Zions Bank Stadium. His eyes welled with emotion as he reflected on a journey that spanned continents, cultures, and championships.
> “This game gave me everything,” Lasike said. “But more than the game, it’s the people — my teammates, my coaches, the fans, my family — that made it a life worth fighting for. I retire with a full heart.”
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Lasike came to the United States to play football at Brigham Young University, where he transitioned from rugby standout to bruising fullback for the Cougars. After brief stints with the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals in the NFL, he returned to rugby, quickly making a name for himself with Harlequins in England’s Premiership and later with the U.S. National Team, earning over 20 caps.
But it was his return to Utah and Major League Rugby that reignited his connection with the sport’s community roots. Since joining the Utah Warriors in 2021, Lasike has been a cornerstone of the franchise — on the scoreboard, in the locker room, and across the state.
> “Paul is the heart of Utah rugby,” said Warriors GM Brandon Sparks. “He carried the legacy of BYU rugby into the professional era and did it with a level of grace and toughness that’s incredibly rare.”
Lasike finishes his MLR career with 1,380 meters gained, 17 tries, and an impact that can’t be measured on a stat sheet. Off the field, his work with youth rugby programs, Polynesian community outreach, and mental health advocacy have elevated his legacy far beyond sport.
In retirement, Lasike confirmed he will take on a new role as Director of Player Development and Cultural Outreach with the Utah Warriors organization, ensuring his mentorship continues for the next generation of athletes.
> “He may be stepping off the field,” said head coach Greg Cooper, “but Paul’s influence will echo in this club for decades.”
Paul Lasike retires not just as a rugby legend, but as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and purpose.
A warrior, always.
