West Virginia baseball coach Steve Sabins revealed how his team was battling the heat vs. LSU at Alex Box Stadium in Game 1 of the Baton Rouge super regional.
With temperatures over 90 degrees on Saturday afternoon, Sabins was asked during a TV interview on the ESPN broadcast how West Virginia was managing to play through the hot conditions. The first-year coach said that Gold Bond was the substance of choice.
“Nothing up to this point, just a lot of Gold Bond,” Sabins said when asked how the team was handling a temperature that felt like 103 degrees. “Our guys are gold bonded up and drinking a lot of water.”
Gold Bond powder and sprays are often used by athletes during hot and humid conditions to battle excess moisture and provide a cooling effect.

The heat did appear to get to WVU relief pitcher JJ Glasscock, who was quickly removed from the game in the fifth inning after it appeared he couldn’t get a grip on the ball. His pitches were nowhere near the plate as the ball appeared to be slipping out of his hand.LSU left fielder Derek Curiel hit a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead, and the hits didn’t stop there. LSU rolled to a 16-9 victory
