Coveted DB Jaxson Gates Advances BYU Official Visit Amid Intensifying Recruitment
Three-star cornerback Jaxson Gates, currently committed to Syracuse, has rescheduled his official visit to BYU, moving it up to this weekend. Originally planning to visit during the BYU-Utah game in October, Gates’s decision to expedite his visit underscores BYU’s growing appeal in his recruitment process.
Gates, a standout from Damien High School in La Verne, California, has seen a surge in interest since his commitment to Syracuse in November 2024. His impressive athleticism, highlighted by a personal best of 10.39 seconds in the 100-meter dash, has attracted offers from several programs, including Michigan State, Utah, Oregon State, San Jose State, Colorado State, Boise State, UNLV, and most recently, Oklahoma State.
BYU’s coaching staff, particularly cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, has been instrumental in building a relationship with Gates. After observing Gates at a showcase event, Gilford extended an offer, impressed by Gates’s performance in position drills despite his concurrent track commitments. Gates appreciates BYU’s emphasis on man-to-man coverage, aligning with his high school experience and playing style.
As Gates evaluates his options, he prioritizes programs that offer strong developmental opportunities and early playing time. His upcoming visit to BYU will provide a closer look at the program’s fit for his athletic and academic aspirations.
