Former BYU Guard Amari Whiting Transfers to San Diego State for Fresh Start
In a move that’s stirred conversation across the Mountain West, former BYU women’s basketball guard Amari Whiting has announced her transfer to San Diego State University. The promising young talent departs Provo after one season, seeking a fresh start and greater opportunity with the Aztecs.
Whiting, a former four-star recruit out of Idaho and daughter of BYU assistant coach Sunny Whiting, entered the BYU program in 2023 with high expectations. She was regarded as one of the top young guards in the West and showed flashes of elite potential during her freshman season. Despite limited playing time, she averaged 3.4 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game, and her court vision and quickness were evident whenever she saw the floor.
Sources close to Whiting suggest the decision to transfer was not easy but was made with her long-term development in mind. At San Diego State, Whiting is expected to have a clearer path to a starting role and the chance to lead a team that’s building momentum in the Mountain West Conference.
“I’m incredibly thankful for my time at BYU,” Whiting said in a statement posted to social media. “But after prayer and reflection, I know this move is what’s best for my journey. I’m excited to join the Aztecs and give everything I’ve got.”
San Diego State’s coaching staff has expressed excitement about Whiting’s arrival. Her speed, basketball IQ, and natural leadership qualities are seen as vital to the program’s next phase of growth.
The move marks one of the most notable portal exits from BYU this offseason and adds to the narrative of a reshaping roster as the Cougars prepare for their second year in the Big 12.
