Former BYU Forward Rose Bubakar Transfers to Texas Tech, Brings Versatility and Experience to Red Raiders
Former BYU forward Rose Bubakar has announced her transfer to Texas Tech, marking a significant addition to the Lady Raiders’ frontcourt for the upcoming season. The 6-foot-1 junior, known for her athleticism, defensive tenacity, and ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, will bring much-needed experience and leadership to a Texas Tech team aiming to climb the Big 12 ranks.
Bubakar played a vital role for BYU during the 2023–24 campaign, averaging 8.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. Her impact, however, extended beyond the box score. Bubakar often took on the assignment of guarding the opposing team’s best player, showcasing a defensive motor that made her invaluable to the Cougars’ rotation. Offensively, her ability to slash to the basket and rebound effectively gave BYU second-chance opportunities and consistent inside scoring.
In announcing her transfer, Bubakar expressed gratitude for her time in Provo and excitement about her future in Lubbock. “BYU gave me a strong foundation, and I’m thankful for the memories and support,” she wrote. “I’m looking forward to the challenge and growth that comes with joining Texas Tech. I’m ready to compete.”
Texas Tech head coach Krista Gerlich praised Bubakar’s toughness and versatility, calling her “a competitor who plays with heart and intensity.” With the Big 12 becoming increasingly competitive, Bubakar’s ability to guard multiple positions and contribute on offense should give the Lady Raiders an edge.
For BYU, Bubakar’s departure is part of a wave of roster changes as the team adapts to its Big 12 transition. Still, the program remains committed to rebuilding around younger talent and key transfers of their own. Bubakar’s journey is another example of how the transfer portal is reshaping college basketball dynamics — and rivalries.
