Texas Longhorns Set to Transform McCombs Field into Nation-Leading Softball Stadium
The University of Texas has officially unveiled ambitious plans to elevate its softball program with a massive renovation of Red and Charline McCombs Field, signaling a new era of investment, excellence, and commitment to women’s sports in Austin.
The project — which university officials describe as a “transformational initiative” — aims to redefine the softball fan and athlete experience, with construction set to begin in late 2025 and completion targeted for the 2027 season.
Key features of the upgraded McCombs Field will include:
Expanded seating capacity, including premium box and club-level seating options.
A state-of-the-art indoor training facility with batting cages, pitching lanes, and performance labs.
A new video board, sound system, and LED lighting package for night games.
Upgraded locker rooms, recovery areas, and team meeting spaces designed to match Power Five baseball standards.
Enhanced concession areas and fan zones for an interactive game day experience.
Athletic Director Chris Del Conte emphasized the university’s commitment to building championship-caliber environments for all student-athletes:
> “This isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about honoring the legacy of Texas softball and building a future where we compete — and win — at the highest level.”
Head coach Mike White echoed that sentiment, calling the announcement a “game-changer” for recruiting and player development.
Already a national contender, the Texas softball program’s new home is expected to position the Longhorns among the elite destinations in collegiate softball.
