BYU Football Adds Versatile DB Cam Johnson from Houston in Portal Grab
BYU Football has secured another impact player through the transfer portal, landing defensive back Cam Johnson from the University of Houston. Johnson, a 6-foot, 195-pound junior, brings speed, experience, and versatility to a Cougar secondary that is seeking consistency and depth heading into the 2025 season.
Johnson played in all 12 games for Houston in 2024, recording 48 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups. He lined up primarily as a boundary corner but also took snaps at nickel, showcasing his flexibility and football IQ. With Big 12 experience under his belt, Johnson is expected to contribute immediately at BYU — either as a starter or key rotational piece.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake and defensive coordinator Jay Hill have emphasized improving the secondary after struggling with explosive plays and depth issues last season. Johnson’s arrival addresses both concerns, giving BYU a proven defender who thrives in man and zone coverage schemes.
“I’ve always respected how BYU plays defense — fast, physical, and disciplined,” said Johnson. “When I entered the portal, I wanted to find a place that values development and leadership, and I found that in Provo.”
Recruiting analysts praised the pickup, noting that Johnson’s instincts and toughness will bring stability to BYU’s back end. He also adds value on special teams, having returned punts and kicks during his time at Houston.
Johnson chose BYU over offers from Indiana, San Diego State, and SMU. His commitment marks the fifth portal addition for BYU this offseason and continues the program’s strong push to bolster its roster with experienced, high-upside talent.
With fall camp approaching, Johnson is expected to immediately compete for a starting role and could play a pivotal part in reshaping BYU’s defensive identity in the Big 12.
