Former Utah State Star DE John Rys Plumlee Commits to BYU via Transfer Portal
BYU Football has added a major defensive asset to its roster as former Utah State standout defensive end John Rys Plumlee has officially committed to join the Cougars. The veteran pass rusher, known for his relentless motor and disruptive presence off the edge, enters Provo with two years of eligibility and a reputation as one of the Mountain West’s most underrated defenders.
Plumlee had a breakout 2023 season at Utah State, recording 9 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and 3 forced fumbles while earning All-Mountain West honors. His combination of size (6’4″, 255 lbs) and agility made him a matchup nightmare for opposing offensive tackles. His ability to play both defensive end and outside linebacker in multiple fronts gives BYU’s defense a versatile weapon as it transitions further into Big 12 competition.
The move is seen as a major recruiting victory for BYU’s defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who has prioritized toughness and depth in the front seven this offseason. Plumlee’s familiarity with regional opponents and his leadership qualities were key reasons BYU made him a top target in the portal.
Plumlee cited BYU’s tradition, facilities, and opportunity for immediate impact as the top reasons behind his transfer decision. “I love the energy around the program and what Coach Sitake is building here. I’m ready to contribute to something big in Provo,” he said during his announcement.
With spring camp around the corner, Plumlee is expected to compete for a starting role from day one and elevate a defense that struggled to apply consistent pressure in 2023. If he adapts quickly to the Cougars’ system, Plumlee could be a breakout star in the Big 12 and a future NFL Draft prospect.
His arrival is another sign that BYU is serious about rebuilding its defense with proven, high-motor talent.
