BYU Lands Former Michigan State OL Ethan Boyd to Bolster Offensive Line Depth
In a significant addition to its offensive front, BYU Football has secured a commitment from former Michigan State offensive lineman Ethan Boyd via the NCAA transfer portal. The 6-foot-7, 325-pound lineman brings size, Big Ten experience, and much-needed depth to a BYU offensive line that has undergone major changes over the past year.
Boyd, a native of East Lansing, Michigan, originally committed to his hometown Spartans as a three-star prospect in the 2020 class. Although he didn’t crack the starting lineup consistently at Michigan State, he developed under elite coaching and played in a number of games, gaining valuable experience in one of college football’s most physical conferences.
For BYU, the addition is timely. The Cougars are seeking to reestablish dominance in the trenches after a rocky 2023 season where the offensive line struggled with both injuries and consistency. Boyd’s transfer not only boosts the size of the line but also brings a high football IQ and the potential to step into a starting role early.
Head coach Kalani Sitake and offensive line coach Darrell Funk have made the line of scrimmage a priority this offseason, and Boyd’s commitment reflects their aggressive approach in the portal. Boyd is expected to compete immediately for one of the tackle spots, with spring practices serving as a key indicator of how quickly he can acclimate to BYU’s scheme.
Boyd expressed excitement about joining the Cougars, stating that BYU’s program culture, offensive style, and move to the Big 12 were major factors in his decision.
As the Cougars gear up for the 2024 season, the addition of Boyd could prove pivotal in solidifying the foundation for a more potent and balanced offensive attack.
