Ole Miss Linebacker Suntarine Perkins Poised for Breakout Sophomore Season
As Ole Miss prepares for the 2025 football season, one name generating significant buzz in Oxford is linebacker Suntarine Perkins. After a promising freshman campaign, the former five-star recruit is poised for a breakout sophomore season and could be the key to anchoring the Rebels’ evolving defense.
Perkins, who flashed elite athleticism in limited snaps last season, has spent the offseason working closely with new defensive coordinator Pete Golding. The coaching staff is raving about his progress. “He’s faster, stronger, and way more confident,” Golding told reporters. “We’re building the defense around guys like him.”
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 220 pounds, Perkins brings a rare blend of speed, physicality, and instinct that makes him a nightmare for opposing offenses. In spring practices, he displayed improved play recognition and leadership, taking on more responsibilities in calling out defensive sets and adjustments.
Head coach Lane Kiffin is also high on Perkins’ potential. “He’s a freak athlete. If he continues developing the way he has, he’s going to be one of the best defensive players in the SEC,” Kiffin said.
For Perkins, the focus is on consistency. “I just want to help the team win and get better every day,” he said. “Last year, I learned a lot. Now, I’m ready to step up.”
With Ole Miss aiming for a College Football Playoff push, defensive improvement is crucial — and Perkins looks set to be a difference-maker. His emergence could help transform the Rebels from an offensive powerhouse into a well-rounded title contender.
If he stays healthy and continues trending upward, Perkins may not only lead the team in tackles but also work his way onto NFL radars and All-SEC lists by season’s end.
