BYU Running Back LJ Martin Emerging as Offensive X-Factor Ahead of 2025 Season
BYU’s offensive hopes in 2025 may rest heavily on the shoulders of sophomore running back LJ Martin, who has drawn rave reviews throughout spring ball for his development, explosiveness, and versatility. After a promising freshman season, Martin is now emerging as a potential game-changer in the Cougars’ backfield.
Martin rushed for over 500 yards in 2024, showing flashes of power and burst despite sharing carries in a crowded backfield. With more reps and a refined skillset this offseason, he looks ready to become BYU’s lead back and a central figure in the team’s offensive strategy.
“LJ’s grown a lot—not just physically, but mentally,” said running backs coach Harvey Unga. “He understands the offense better and is running with a purpose. He’s going to be a big part of what we do.”
One of the biggest improvements in Martin’s game has been his vision and decision-making. Coaches report that he’s hitting holes quicker, showing more patience when needed, and making defenders miss at the second level. His improved pass-catching skills have also made him a more complete threat—something that offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick plans to capitalize on.
“He’s dynamic,” Roderick noted. “He can run inside, bounce it outside, and catch out of the backfield. That versatility adds a layer to our offense we’re excited about.”
Martin credits his growth to a full offseason in the BYU strength and conditioning program, film study, and a deeper bond with the offensive line.
As BYU looks to make noise in the Big 12, having a dependable and explosive back like Martin could be the key to sustaining drives and opening up the passing game. If his trajectory continues, don’t be surprised if Martin becomes one of the conference’s breakout stars in 2025.
